Truth: Know that you have to show up!

Get the inside story on interior design and construction

This is Two Truths and a Why where you get the real story on interior design and remodeling. In this blog series, I ask industry experts why they do what they do and what they think you must know before you renovate.

Are you ready? Let's do this.

Fred Gutierrez on showing up when you remodel

Today, an interview with my friend Fred Gutierrez of Shepherd PMC. Fred isn't your architect (though he has an MS in architecture and a license to practice), and he's not your builder. He's the guide who helps you navigate the daunting and expensive process of building a new home or managing a major renovation. Fred can help you establish a project timeline, set a realistic budget, and lead your renovation team with empathy and self awareness.

"Know that you have to show up! Full attention cultivates relationships that build trust. Start by showing up with curiosity, honesty, and a willingness to learn from the strengths of others in the room.

Fred's #1 Truth

"Know that you have to show up! Full attention cultivates relationships that build trust. Start by showing up with curiosity, honesty, and a willingness to learn from the strengths of others in the room. Be authentic. Start with your feelings then explore why those exist. Together discuss what’s not being said. This can happen in any meeting."

Fred's #2 Truth

"Meet regularly but not routinely. Make them as small as viably possible. Structure your meeting to foster attention. Empathize with struggles and celebrate success. Give everyone equal time to be seen and heard. If you feel there is not enough to talk about, you must meet to celebrate the fact that the project is going well!"

Why Fred does what he does

"Building a Home is an experience you, your family and all those around you will not forget. Homeowners can either be subject to an emotional rollercoaster. Not knowing the turn ahead. Or they can lay the tracks for the story they want to remember. Be remembered by! I want homeowners to be proud of the story they write. I want the tide to rise so that everyone designing and building this home are proud to be a part of that story! It becomes a shared story! A legend."
