Project: Mountain Modern Bathroom · Northern California

The Client

A professional couple with teen children who had been overwhelmed for years by the idea of tackling their primary bath and closet.

The Brief

Our clients wanted to transform a very tight, awkward primary bath into a larger, luxurious primary suite they’d enjoy using every morning.

Primary bathroom goals:

  • A double vanity for both partners.
  • A large shower.
  • A new built‑in, semi‑private toilet area.
  • If possible, a freestanding or walk‑in tub for occasional use and resale value.
  • A private entrance so early risers don’t disturb the other person.
  • Layout and fixture options that could scale to different budget levels.

Primary closet goals:

  • Take advantage of wasted space between the existing reach‑in closet and primary bath.
  • Create a functional, budget‑friendly walk‑in or walk‑through wardrobe, organized around their actual needs, not just standard hanging rods.

They wanted to finally complete a project that had felt overwhelming and out of scale for years.

Before: tiny bath, oversized hall, wasted potential

The original primary bath was a cramped, L‑shaped space with just one sink, awkwardly tucked beside a far more spacious hall bath. (Through the right door in the photo)

A wide hallway and an oversized reach‑in closet consumed valuable square footage without adding purpose, leaving the entire area feeling disconnected and disproportionate.

It was a space that fell short of the home’s character and potential—ready to be reimagined into something far more functional and refined.

What We Did

We rebalanced the entire suite:

  • Squared off the hall bath and repositioned the tub and toilet to use space more efficiently.
  • Created a curbless wet room at the end of the primary bath with a freestanding tub and large shower—visually dramatic and highly functional.
  • Tucked the toilet into a U‑shaped alcove, keeping it out of the main sightline.
  • Replaced the reach‑in closet with custom wardrobe cabinets along the approach to the bathroom, and added a matching double‑sink vanity beyond—turning the zone into a walk‑through wardrobe rather than a dark closet.

The key to this transformation? Borrowing space from the adjacent and oversized hall bath.
